Background and rationale

  • We want to ensure a safe return to campus so that we can get back into learning routines as well as avoid disruptions and delays.

  • San Mateo County has made it clear that safety measures will continue to be required because vaccinations for children under the age of 12 are not expected to be available until at least fall 2021.

  • A negative COVID test result from a local (Bay Area) vendor is required for students to return to campus for the first day of school on August 25. This is aligned with our goal of remaining as safe a campus community as possible.

  • Our Return to Campus Plan after the summer is consistent with what has worked well this spring. The plan is based on what we know today from science, CDC guidelines, and county requirements. PBS will follow the most conservative guidelines and requirements recommended by various local, state, and national agencies.

  • Although we recognize that the guidance can change between May and August, it is clear that requirements for returning to in-person instruction will be unlikely to change since PBS-aged students will not have access to COVID vaccinations.

The Plan

  • Families are expected back in the Bay Area by Wednesday, August 18, or to conclude travel (as defined by local, state, and federal guidance, see Domestic Travel During COVID-19) by August 18.

  • For families in the Bay Area by Monday, August 16, or who conclude travel (see above) by August 16: Schedule your COVID test sometime on August 18, 19, 20, or 21.

  • For families in the Bay Area by Tuesday, August 17, or who conclude travel (see above) by August 17: Schedule your COVID test sometime on August 19, 20, or 21.

  • For families in the Bay Area by Wednesday, August 18, or who conclude travel (see above) by August 18: Schedule your COVID test sometime on August 20, 21, or 22.

  • For families engaged in travel (see above) after Wednesday, August 18, or who return to the Bay Area after August 18: Schedule your COVID test on the third, fourth, or fifth day after your return date. This could result in a delay in your return to campus.

  • Upload student test results: August 24 by 9:00 a.m.

  • First day of school: August 25
