Music Teacher (K–5)

Phillips Brooks School (PBS) announces a search for a full-time Music Teacher beginning in August 2018. This person will join a growth-oriented and collaborative learning community committed to the school’s mission and core values of kindness, courage, community, and love of learning.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a music curriculum that exposes children to a wide variety of music genres and styles.
  • Cultivate student curiosity, reflection, and joy as they grow in their understanding of music appreciation, instrumental music, and vocal music.
  • Produce annual performances to showcase student progress.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and the administration to bring music elements into classroom plays and annual celebrations such as graduation.
  • Plan and oversee field trips that tap into the vibrant music scene in the Bay Area and complement the music curriculum.
  • Conduct and accompany the school choir.
  • Ensure the safety of each student by supervising and engaging in recess games, lunch, and transitions between classrooms.
  • Seek professional development opportunities to stay in touch with best practices in music education.
  • Communicate with parents about student progress and growth areas.
  • Welcome parent volunteers into the classroom and on field trips on a regular basis.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for music education in a Preschool-5th Grade setting. This candidate will have excellent communication and collaboration skills, a nurturing teaching style, and a sense of humor. Training in Responsive Classroom and similar approaches to social-emotional learning is preferred. Piano accompaniment skills are helpful, but not required.  

The position requires an undergraduate degree and experience teaching music to children or young adults. There is an additional collaboration opportunity to teach our youngest learners in our Early Learning Center (ELC) or advise the ELC teaching team on musical resources, activities, and experiences. Preferred qualifications include specific experience teaching in a K-5 setting and a credential and/or a master’s degree in music education, conducting, education, or a related field.
