What makes PBS so special? The feeling that no matter where you go on
campus, you belong. Starting with the New Family Picnic in May, we will
begin to welcome you into the PBS family. Lessons of community and belonging
are so important for children in today's world. In addition, we will help
the children learn how they are part of the larger community. Local
community service projects teach the children the importance of their roles
in the PBS community, the local community, and the global community.
Mission Statement
The Phillips Brooks School community inspires students to love learning, to
develop a spiritual nature, to communicate effectively, to be kind to others
and to respect the uniqueness of each person.
Core Values
-
- We value strength of character and the integrity to do what is right in spite of the risk of fear or discomfort.
-
- We value ourselves as responsible members of both our local and global communities and in doing so demonstrate a deeper understanding and compassion for others.
-
- We value empathy and respect for self and others through honest and effective communication.
-
- We value learning as a lifelong process, driven by intrinsic motivation and focused on process rather than product.
Philosophy
The Phillips Brooks School prepares each student to live a creative, humane,
and compassionate life and to be a contributing member of society. The
School believes in blending the academic, physical and social aspects of its
program with spiritual awareness and understanding. This balance provides an
environment that celebrates individuality, promotes problem solving through
critical thinking, and encourages students to fulfill their potential.
The curriculum emphasizes the basic academic disciplines and their
integration into everyday life, while developing the foundation for
individual scholastic excellence and inspiring an enthusiasm for life-long
learning. The study of foreign languages and the exploration of world
cultures encourage and strengthen global awareness. Programs in physical
education, fine arts, and performing arts complement the curriculum.
Participation and cooperation in these programs nurture self-discipline and
confidence.
The Phillips Brooks School integrates the spiritual growth of the child into
every aspect of the educational process. The formal curriculum and the
community service program teach spirituality and moral values. Students
learn to show respect for themselves, others, and their environment and to
solve problems through open communication. The School encourages children to
reach beyond themselves to value and embrace cultural, ethnic, religious,
and socioeconomic diversity, and to respond to the needs and rights of
everyone. Because an essential part of the child's learning experience is
the family, the School fosters close cooperation with parents and open,
honest communication between home and school.
The total school program weaves the intellectual, spiritual, social, and
physical areas of growth into the fabric that is the Phillips Brooks School
community. This community provides the base upon which students will
continue to grow and succeed both as individuals and citizens of the world.
Diversity Mission Statement
The Phillips Brooks School is dedicated to the creation of an environment in
which each child can become a confident, respectful and compassionate
individual by accepting and valuing the uniqueness of self and others.
Inclusivity Statement
An inclusive school consists of a community of students, parents, and
teachers in which each member feels connected, comfortable and respected,
and celebrates that which is unique in each of us. At Phillips Brooks,
inclusiveness encompasses, but is not limited by class and economic
differences, physical attributes, ethnicity, race, religion, culture,
nationality, family structure, gender, sexual orientation, age, or other
characteristics that contribute to each individual's full identity.
Spirituality Statement
The religious orientation at Phillips Brooks derives primarily from the
school's Episcopalian origin and is welcoming and inclusive of many faiths.
Deeply embedded in the school's culture is the belief that respect for
individuals is inspired by understanding. Accordingly, throughout our
program we instill respect for religious diversity through appreciation of
the many values and traditions shared among religions. The broad range of
religions practiced by our families enriches the school.
The school is firmly committed to building spiritual and moral values among
our students, working in close partnership with our families. However, it is
not the intent of the school to assume responsibility for the religious
upbringing of our students that continues to be the responsibility of their
families.
All children in grades K through 5 attend chapel; Parents and visitors are
welcome to attend chapel at any time.
